Chapter 1 – Excerpt

Thus begins our adventure towards the discovery of sustainability. We will travel together, covering our planet, from digging into the bowels of the nucleus to hovering in the atmosphere.

Our World, planet Earth, strong and fragile at the same time, is our home. But let’s nor forget: yes, it’s ours, but on loan.

1.1. The Global Context of Sustainability

Why should we care about our planet? As mentioned, it is only on loan and we should try to keep it intact for future generations (not only Human!). This ball of fire, rock and water is our home. Are we really, and sincerely, convinced that we are treating it well? It is urgent to consider our actions, driven by the environmental disasters that are now the order of the day. The footprint we have left has such an extent and depth that it has repercussions not only in the short term but also in the long term. Humans, who act ignoring or forgetting the consequences of their individual actions, are inexorably altering the balance of our planet. Fast fashion industries, for example, are among the most polluting in the world. Every year, they use 93 billion cubic meters of water and are responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions, estimated at between 8% and 10% of the global total. Meanwhile, the food industry, produces more than 17 million tonnes of CO2. 29% comes from the production of foods of plant origin, while almost double (57%) is due to foods of animal origin.

1.2. Current Environmental Threats

As children, we were terrified of monsters under our bed or inside our closet. As adults, we become aware that what scares us are not imaginary, but real. The real monsters are undoubtedly deforestation, water pollution, the emission of harmful gases: they are all elements that are changing our planet and touching the lives of all living organisms.

We need to become champions of our planet and understand that, only together, we can defeat these threats. The greatest threat lies in the depletion of biodiversity. As we will address in the coming chapters, life on our planet has a fragile balance that must be preserved in every way.

Human actions, direct or indirect, can harm the lives of different species. By now, it is well known that the biggest (and worst) natural disasters are caused by human intervention, whether intentional or not. Hydrogeological instability, for example, is one of the most disastrous and dangerous events we encounter. Landslides and floods are a direct consequence of slow and continuous erosive activity. And in most cases, unfortunately, the cause is due to human activity. Unhealthy and excessive land consumption, overbuilding, superficial geomorphological evaluation of the land, and interventions aimed at forcing the flow of water resources (rivers) are all recurring elements of the contributing causes when analyzing natural disasters. If humans started to consider the nature of the environment in which they live, and tried as much as possible not to shape it according to their own needs, the damage caused would be significantly less. Just consider that the presence of wooded areas and a vegetation canopy would guarantee the consolidation of the soil and the absorption of rainwater.

1.3. The Urgency of Action

But how can we play a decisive role in this problem we all saw coming? It definitely starts with us. We must educate ourselves on environmental awareness and understand that we win when we work together as a team! We have very little time to rectify what was previously done. Each small gesture is not a drop in the ocean, it’s a fundamental step towards victory. Despite the initial confusion regarding it, sustainability is the only index that produces long-term value and consequent stability.

According to an in-depth report on temperature alteration from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change), a marked increase compared to previous decades is estimated. This is an extremely effective statement about the vulnerability caused by climate change. It is estimated that between 3.3 and 3.6 billion people live in highly fragile contexts that are susceptible to climate change. At the same time, it’s necessary to consider how the anthropic environment is interdependent on the ecosystem in which it acts. This helps to understand how all existing species are absolutely dependent on the ecosystem and interconnected with each other. Furthermore, it is necessary to remember that many human activities rely heavily on the environment. While the majority can be immediately traced back to the food sector (livestock, fishing, agriculture),we must remember that interconnected sectors such as Energy and Tourism are highly influenced by it as well.
